Nanchang Institute of Technology, one of the national comprehensive universities, is authorized by the Ministry of Education to have a qualification of enrolling undergraduate students. Initially sponsored by the Ministry of Water Conservancy, the institute is currently co-managed by the local and central governments, but mainly run by the former after a readjustment of the State Council in 2000 year. Jiangxi Water College, its predecessor, was founded in 1958 and resumed its enrollment in 1978 and renamed as Nanchang Water Conservancy College in 1992. In May 2004, the Ministry of Education ratified its growth into a comprehensive university--Nanchang Institute of Technology. Faced with the new development opportunity of institutions of higher learning, the school authorities lose no time to put forth its development orientation: base itself upon Jiangxi and keep in view the whole country while meantime attaching importance to the industry of water conservancy; focus on the development of undergraduate programs with three-year courses and adult courses as its subsidiaries; concentrate upon the stepping up of engineering courses in coordination with the development of multiple disciplinary programs; launch the active scientific research in a bid to better serve the local economic development; aim at evolving itself within a ten-year time into an influential distinctive engineering university in or beyond the province.
    Nanchang Institute of Technology consists of the Pengqiao campus and Yaohu Lake campus with a total area of 2026 mu. The Yaohu Lake campus, located in Nanchang Hi-Tech Development Zone, is scenery and convenient in traffic, while the Pengqiao campus lies near the downtown Qingshan Lake. Its buildings has a total space of 530,000 square meters and it boasts a variety of teaching and living facilities as well as the activity facilities such as the standard sports fields and swimming pool.
    At present, Nanchang Institute of Technology has more than 900 staff members. Among the teaching faculty of 504，there are 27 full professors and 105 associate professors or counterparts, and 150 have got master’s degree including 34 of doctoral degree. It has invited 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to work in the school, and there is 1 candidate for “Millions of New Era Talents Project”, 5 Provincial Renowned Teachers, 8 provincial mid-aged and young outstanding teachers and a large number of mid-aged and young backbone teachers at school level. In recent years there are altogether 8 scholars to enjoy the special allowance of the State Council for their contributions.
Nanchang Institute of Technology now runs 57 undergraduate specialties and programs with 15,000 full-time students coming from 31 provinces or municipalities. The rate of student employment has ranked high among all the universities of engineering for several years successively. In 2004 the rate of employment of graduates was 94.61%, thus ranking the first of all universities of the same kind in Jiangxi.
    Nanchang Institute of Technology provides a good environment for teaching and research. It has 50 million worth of fixed assets of teaching equipment. There are currently 28 experiment facilities and training centers such as the Water Conservancy Engineering Center, the Civil Engineering Center, the Electrical Engineering Center, the Communication Engineering Center, the Automation Center, the Computer Center, the Network Technology Center, the Mapping Engineering Center and the 3S-engineering Center; and among these, the Computer Center is a key laboratory appraised by the Ministry and the Civil Engineering and the Electronic Engineering are endorsed by the provincial level in 2001 to pass the evaluation. Besides, it houses the reliable training bases outside the campus by contracting with 38 units like the second contingent of the Armed Forces Water Conservancy and Jiangxi Hongmen Power Station. There is a digital campus based on kilomega optical fiber network, a frequency transmission station for teaching English, 15 language rooms with 820 seats, 95 multimedia classrooms with 13,350 seats and 1,520 computers used for teaching activity. The library contains 640,000 volumes plus 250,000 electronic volumes, with 1,417 domestic and foreign journals.
    Over recent years the institute has undertaken and accomplished 29 provincial and ministerial subjects. The number of books or textbooks written or edited by its faculty amounts to 62, along with 1000-odd papers released in various kinds of academic journals including more than 100 papers published in the national key journals. The school has made remarkable achievements in the teaching research, with the Construction System of Small Classes for a Quarter Semester and the Reform and Practice of the Cultivation Mode of Talents of Hydrodynamics of the College winning the Provincial First Award of the Excellent Teaching respectively. In 2005 the school won 1 National Second Award for the Excellent Teaching, 1 Provincial First Award and 4 Provincial Second Awards. In the recent three years the institute has undertaken and participated in 9 national subjects for teaching research and 24 provincial and ministerial ones, among which there are 3 of the first items of the New Era Plan of the Cultivation Mode and the Reform of the Teaching Material of the Professional College supported by the Ministry of Education, and 8 second items. As the institute insists upon the necessary research work in a bid to boost the teaching level, the teachers have made evident improvements in their academic research in recent years, thus laying a sound foundation for the undergraduate teaching and scientific research.
    In the new century, Nanchang Institute of Technology is heading toward the new frontier and embracing a new future to contribute itself to the great revitalization of China.
